Japan lifts tsunami warnings after a 7.5 magnitude earthquake

TOKYO – Japanese authorities lifted tsunami warnings on December 9, hours later

A strong earthquake of 7.5 magnitude

The tornadoes shook the northeastern regions, injuring at least 30 people and forcing about 90,000 residents to evacuate their homes.

The quake struck off the coast at 11.15pm on December 8, and the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said a tsunami up to 3 meters high could hit the country's northeastern coast. Warnings were issued for Hokkaido, Aomori and Iwate prefectures, and tsunami waves 20 cm to 70 cm high were observed at several ports, the JMA said.

By the early hours of December 9, the JMA downgraded the warnings to warnings, and later raised all warnings. There were no reports of serious damage.

The epicenter of the earthquake was 80 kilometers off the coast of Aomori Prefecture, at a depth of 54 kilometers.

On Japan's earthquake intensity scale from 1 to 7, the quake was recorded as a “top 6” in Hashinohe City, Aomori Prefecture – a quake strong enough to make it impossible to continue standing or move without crawling.

“So far, I have received reports of 30 people injured and one fire,” Prime Minister Sanae Takaishi told reporters.

East Japan Railway Co. has suspended some services in the region, which was also hit by a devastating 9.0-magnitude earthquake in March 2011. The operator said other train services were facing delays in northern Japan.

In the wake of the quake, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a warning for a wide area from the northernmost island of Hokkaido all the way to Chiba Prefecture east of Tokyo, calling on residents to be vigilant about the possibility of a strong earthquake again within a week.

“There is a possibility of more strong earthquakes over the next few days,” a JMA official said at a press conference.

The utilities said no violations had been reported at nuclear power plants operated by Tohoku Electric Power and Hokkaido Electric Power in the region. Thousands of homes lost power immediately after the earthquake, but service was restored by the morning of December 9.

The yen fell against major currencies after news of the earthquake, with the dollar and euro touching their highest levels during the session.

Japan is one of the countries in the world most vulnerable to earthquakes, with an earthquake occurring at least every five minutes. Japan is located in the “Ring of Fire” of volcanoes and oceanic trenches that partially surround the Pacific Basin, and Japan witnesses about 20 percent of the world's earthquakes with a magnitude of 6 or more.

Shelves of books and documents that fell during the earthquake are seen in Kyodo News' Hakodate office.

The northeastern region suffered one of the country's deadliest earthquakes on March 11, 2011, when a 9.0 magnitude earthquake struck under the ocean off the coast of the northern city of Sendai. It was the most powerful ever recorded in Japan and triggered a series of massive tsunamis that devastated a wide swath of the Pacific coast and killed nearly 20,000 people.

Drawing on lessons learned from that disaster, when a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck two days ago, the government now issues a one-week “major earthquake” warning whenever a major earthquake strikes the region.

The 2011 tsunami also damaged the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, triggering a series of explosions and meltdowns in the world's worst nuclear disaster in 25 years. Reuters
