Rain and snow fall on areas in Japan that were hit by a strong earthquake

The Japan Meteorological Agency said that rain and snow fell in areas affected by the strong earthquake that struck the east coast of Aomori Prefecture on Monday.

Meteorological authorities say a frontal and low pressure system is causing rain and snow in places hit by the 7.5-magnitude quake, including areas in Aomori Prefecture and southern Hokkaido.

Caution is advised, as the earthquake caused loosening of the soil in some places.

Meteorologists say that the winter pressure pattern may lead to heavy snowfall in some areas on Thursday night and Friday.

She called on citizens to be careful for fear of traffic disturbances. Authorities indicate that snow may fall from the roofs of houses, and avalanches, lightning strikes, wind gusts, and tornadoes may occur. They add that snow may accumulate on power lines and cause power outages.

The meteorological agency issued an “earthquake warning off the coast of Hokkaido and Sanriku” after the massive quake. Residents are urged to prepare for a possible huge earthquake.

The agency says there is a high probability of a strong earthquake occurring along the Japan Trench and Chishima Trench off Hokkaido.

The report covers 182 municipalities in Hokkaido, Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima, Ibaraki, and Chiba prefectures.

The warning does not mean that an earthquake is certain, and authorities are not asking people to evacuate in advance. But they are urging residents to prepare emergency bags to ensure they can evacuate quickly, if they need to.

Seismic activity has continued off the eastern coast of Aomori since Monday. A magnitude 4 earthquake occurred on the Japanese scale, ranging from 0 to 7 degrees, on Wednesday.

Foreign residents were advised to prepare for a possible huge earthquake

Foreign residents in eastern Japan's Ibaraki prefecture have been urged to remain vigilant after authorities issued a warning of a possible massive earthquake. A strong earthquake struck northern Japan on Monday.

Lak Chankunthi, a Cambodian woman who has lived in Japan for more than 10 years, called on Cambodian residents in the town of Ibaraki to prepare for a possible earthquake.

Ibaraki is located next to the coastal city of Oarai, which must take disaster preparedness measures under the warning.

Luck spoke to six women who work as technical trainees in the agricultural sector. She advised women that if an earthquake occurs at home, they should protect themselves by hiding under a desk or other structure, then move to an evacuation shelter.

I also told them that if a tsunami is reported when they are near the sea, they should immediately evacuate to higher ground.

She recommended stocking up on food and water and making sure home furniture is secure.

One of the trainees said that she realized how important it is to have the right knowledge for disaster prevention.

Luck said she was glad she was able to pass on important information. She said she hopes women will put this into practice in the event of a major earthquake.

All elementary and middle schools have reopened in the northern Japanese city of Hashinohe in Aomori Prefecture. The city, located on the Pacific coast, was most affected by the strong earthquake that occurred on Monday.

The quake off the coast brought an upper magnitude 6 to the city, based on Japan's zero-to-7 seismic scale, stronger than anywhere else in the country.

All elementary and middle schools in Hachinohe have reopened

Most of the schools that were closed reopened on Wednesday.

On Thursday, the last two primary schools to reopen welcomed their students back after their running water supply was fully restored.

Shortly after 7 a.m., with light snow falling, children were seen showing up at Fukiage Primary School, which has more than 510 students.

One fifth-grade boy said he had been worried about the possibility of another major earthquake while at home, and is now looking forward to playing basketball with his friends at school.

Hachinohe is one of the municipalities that remains under vigil for a week for a possible strong earthquake later.

The city Board of Education is asking school staff to double-check they know evacuation routes for their children. The council also asks schools to refrain from outdoor activities until next Monday.
