TikTok doomsday predictions: Japan earthquake raises Cascadia Big One fears

Do the powerful geomagnetic storm and earthquake that struck Japan this week mean that a major earthquake is approaching?

That's what some TikTok influencers think.

A 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck Japan on Tuesday, triggering a small tsunami, according to the Associated Press.

The earthquake occurred near the Japan Trench subduction zone, where the 2011 magnitude 9.0 Fukushima earthquake occurred. The Japan Trench is similar to the Cascadia subduction zone off the coasts of Oregon, Washington and British Columbia.

Naturally, social media speculation turned to the Pacific Northwest and greater region.

An influencer posted a video that subsequently garnered 13,000 likes and a flurry of comments, claiming that a solar flare caused by Tuesday's geomagnetic storm caused a “non-tectonic earthquake” in Japan and that “Cascadia is next.”

Others on social media cited a young boy from Kentucky who TikTokers say predicted the Japanese earthquake and tsunami — though some in those comments claim the prediction actually refers to a major flood expected on Christmas Day.

California-based geologist Brian Castillo, who posts on TikTok as “Friendly Earthquake,” posted a series of his videos addressing concerns about any upcoming solar flare it might cause or other impending earthquakes along the West Coast.

“No,” Castillo said in one of the videos.[Cascadia] Not the next one. No one can tell you that.”

If not now, when will the big one strike?

Here's what the Oregon Office of Emergency Management says about the Cascadia Subduction Zone:

“The Cascadia Subduction Zone is a 600-mile-long fault that extends from northern California to British Columbia and is about 70-100 miles offshore of the Pacific Coast. 43 earthquakes in the last 10,000 years have occurred within this fault. The last earthquake to occur on this fault was on January 26, 1700, with an estimated magnitude of 9.0.”

We know the exact date of the last “Big One” through oral histories kept by local indigenous groups, but also through historical records from as far away as Japan. The 1700 earthquake sent a large tsunami to the coast of Japan.

The average time between subduction zone earthquakes off the Oregon coast is about 500 years, according to experts.

OEM says that “there is an approximately 37 percent probability of a 7.1+ Richter scale earthquake occurring in this fault zone within the next 50 years.”

What about solar flares?

Solar storms are real and can damage infrastructure – especially electronic systems – here on Earth – but more importantly, geomagnetic storms do not pose a physical danger to humans.

ABC News meteorologist Ginger Zee took to TikTok to explain:

This isn't the first time TikTok has gone frenzied and predicted the end of the world.

#raptchertalk

In September, a South African preacher went viral predicting that the rapture was imminent and that Jesus would return on September 23 or 24.

TikTok has sprung into action, with viral videos documenting people quitting their jobs and selling their valuables. Other influencers shared “trip tips,” such as leaving farewell messages for those left behind, unlocking their phones, and wearing clean underwear.

Along with #RaptureTok, the hashtag #exvangelical also briefly trended, with those raised in evangelical Christianity but no longer practicing sharing views on Rapture and end times beliefs.

Not all Christians believe in the concept of the rapture, which gained popularity during the American revival movements of the 19th century.

Yellowstone supervolcano

Periodically, fear of the Yellowstone supervolcano erupting will spread on the app. This seems to happen about once a year, usually due to misleading videos showing natural animal migrations in the national park.

If the idea of a catastrophic volcanic eruption on the horizon worries you that 1) we get it but 2) it shouldn't happen — at least not the way the internet thinks it will.

“Most volcanic systems that have massive eruptions do not have them multiple times,” says the USGS. The massive eruption that created the Yellowstone caldera occurred about 2.1 million years ago, and another eruption is not expected.
