Surfers find a 'seismic wave' off the remote southern coast of Western Australia

Out of nowhere, the ocean suddenly explodes as if a bomb had exploded.

Surf photographer Ben Allen said: “It was like an earthquake, the sound was huge.”

“I get goosebumps when I think about it.”

Mr Allen and surfer Chris White were about 60 kilometers off Western Australia's rugged southern coast, filming the break they called “The Thing”.

White saw this break for the first time about 10 years ago while returning from another location.

He said he has been on a mission to find it ever since.

Last year, he and Mr. Allen made the trip and released the vision for the first time this week.

After riding a jet ski for six hours through seas and heavy rain, they spotted him from a distance.

“You see this tap from miles away, and the closer you get to it, the louder it gets,” he said.

This unusual wave is formed when two waves collide over a shallow coral reef, sending a mountain of water skyward.

“The spray extended about 40 metres,” Allen said.

“My drone was at 40 meters and you could see it going beyond that.”

The couple watched for an hour as nature put on a show.

“The ocean roared, the piles were underwater, smashed by the rain and it was cold,” he said.

Mr Allen said the video, which has already had millions of views, was very unusual for its large number of social media followers even though it was generated by artificial intelligence.

“It's like a bath plug, about 30 meters deep, and about one meter deep in the middle… a little ring of coral reef,” he added.

Professor Sharitha Bhattiarachchi, from the University of Western Australia's Ocean Institute, said the deep water surrounding the formation combined with suitable swell conditions created the wave and the tap.

“It's shallow water surrounded by deep water… It's deep ocean water that reaches the reef and then rises incredibly quickly,” he said.

“It's basically two different swell waves coming from two different directions and then they come over the reef and they crash into each other…and then the big tap goes up.”

Professor Pattiarachi said a similar situation occurred on a much smaller scale at most beaches when different waves collided and splashed upwards.

Despite having had some “close calls”, Mr Allen said the pair wanted to surf the break.

“There is a beautiful right hand, but there is chaos behind it,” he said.
