A 6.7-magnitude earthquake strikes northeastern Japan, and a tsunami warning is issued

TOKYO: An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.7 struck Japan's northeastern region on Friday (December 12), prompting a tsunami warning for waves up to 1 meter high from the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

The earthquake occurred at 11.44 am (10.44 am Singapore time) off the coast of Aomori Prefecture at a depth of 20 km, after a larger 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck the same area late on Monday.

The agency said that two waves of 20 centimeters high have been recorded so far, one in the town of Erimo on the main northern island of Hokkaido at 12:35 p.m., and the other three minutes later in the Aomori region.

NHK said there was no clear change in either port.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) also said the quake measured 6.7 and was 130 kilometers off the city of Kogi in Iwate Prefecture on the main island of Honshu.

After Monday's quake, which injured at least 50 people, the government issued a special warning to residents across a wide area, from Hokkaido in the north to Chiba, east of Tokyo, to be on alert for the increasing possibility of a strong earthquake again within a week.

The magnitude of the earthquake that occurred on Friday reached 4 on the Japanese earthquake intensity scale from 1 to 7.

NHK said the shaking level was lower than the larger 7.5-magnitude quake late Monday, which knocked items off shelves, tore up roads, shattered windows and triggered tsunami waves up to 70 cm high.

The Nuclear Regulatory Authority said on Friday that there were no immediate signs of malfunction at nuclear facilities in the region.
