Japan is hit by a 6.7-magnitude earthquake and a tsunami warning

A 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck northern Japan on Friday, days after a powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake in the same area injured at least 50 people, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). The agency also warned that tsunami waves up to 1 meter (3 feet) high could hit the North Pacific coast.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) also said the quake measured 6.7 and was centered 130 kilometers, or 81 miles, from the city of Kogi in Iwate Prefecture on Honshu.

Japan earthquake: Tsunami warning issued

Waves up to one meter high are possible in areas under the warning, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

A tsunami warning, a lower level of tsunami warning, urges area residents to stay away from the ocean. Evacuation is not required under the advisory.

Public Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) reported that the tremor was weaker than the larger quake that occurred on Monday night, which caused items to fall from shelves, damage roads, shatter windows, and caused tsunami waves that reached 70 centimeters in height.

The quake measured 4 on the Japanese earthquake intensity scale, which ranges from 1 to 7.

Friday's quake comes after a 7.5-magnitude quake earlier in the week led to casualties, minor damage and an initial tsunami warning along communities on the Pacific coast. At least 50 people were injured in the earthquake earlier on Monday, which occurred off the coast of Aomori, the northernmost island of Japan's main island of Honshu, NHK reported.

After Monday's earthquake, the Japanese government issued a special warning to residents, including residents of Hokkaido as far north as Chiba, to remain alert in anticipation of the increased possibility of a strong earthquake occurring again within a week.
