China said its citizens should avoid visiting Japan due to the risk of earthquakes

The Chinese government said Chinese citizens should avoid traveling to Japan for the time being, due to the risk of major earthquakes.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said on its website on Thursday that a number of earthquakes have occurred since December 8 off the eastern coast of Japan's main island of Honshu.

She added that the Japanese authorities announced that there is a chance of stronger earthquakes occurring in the region in the near future.

The ministry appeared to be referring to the warning issued by the Japan Meteorological Agency for a week after Monday's 7.5-magnitude earthquake.

The Chinese Ministry said that the earthquake caused several tsunami waves and a large number of casualties. It also claimed that more than 100,000 people were urged to evacuate.

In November, China also advised its citizens to refrain from traveling to Japan, citing what it described as the deteriorating security situation in the country. This came after Japanese Prime Minister Takaishi Sanai's statements in Parliament regarding Taiwan.

Japanese Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Sato Kei said in a press conference on Thursday that the government is making every effort to provide accurate and timely information about disaster preparedness.

He added that Japan adheres to its position that it is necessary to further enhance private sector exchanges and trade activities between Japan and China.

He added that the government will closely monitor the situation to respond appropriately.
