A group of earthquakes off the northeastern coast of Japan has alarmed seismologists, as a new government study warns that up to 199,000 people could be killed in the event of an earthquake measuring 9 on the Richter scale.

The latest quake, a magnitude 4 quake recorded Monday morning off eastern Hokkaido, was small and did not cause any damage.

However, authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and review their evacuation plans after a series of smaller offshore earthquakes in recent days off Aomori and Fukushima prefectures, both within the broader Tohoku region.

Dozens of small earthquakes struck off the coast last week, following a 7.5-magnitude earthquake late last Monday that injured at least 34 people and damaged property across Aomori Prefecture. The Japan Meteorological Agency warned of the increased possibility of an event of magnitude 8 or stronger within days, in an area still bearing scars from the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami that killed nearly 20,000 people.

The latest seismic swarm coincides with the release of a worrying update from the Central Disaster Management Council, which predicts massive losses and destruction if an “extreme magnitude” earthquake strikes along two large ocean trenches off the northeastern coast of Japan.

The Japan Trench, which runs parallel to Ibaraki, Fukushima and Miyagi Prefectures, and the Chishima Trench, which runs off Iwate, Aomori and Hokkaido, are thought to produce catastrophic earthquakes every 300 to 400 years.
