A “radiator rattling” earthquake hits a Lancashire village for the second time in two weeks | Earthquakes

A village in Lancashire has been hit by a 'radiator rattle' earthquake for the second time in just over two weeks.

Residents of Silverdale, a small seaside village five miles south of the Cumbria border, reported a strangely familiar feeling of shaking and shaking in their homes at 5.03am when a 2.5-magnitude earthquake struck the area with its epicenter 1.6 miles (2.6 km) off the coast.

The village and surrounding areas were previously hit by a 3.3 magnitude earthquake on 3 December, which was the strongest earthquake in England since another 3.3 magnitude event in Staffordshire in 2023. There were no reports of injuries or property damage.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) said the most recent quake was an aftershock from a quake felt earlier in the month, and that it was “not unusual” for such tremors to occur in the weeks or months following larger quakes.

People in the Morecambe Bay area described the earthquake with varying levels of intensity, with some saying there was a “fast, sharp jolt” and that it “made a thundering noise”, others posting that it made a “huge bang” and there was a “loud bang and the bedroom window shook” and “radiators and pictures shook”.

“It woke me up. It sounded like a short rumble in the distance, as if it happened a few streets away. It only lasted a few seconds. Nothing like the intensity of the previous quake. I didn't feel the need to check the damage, but because of the recent quake, I knew for sure it was an earthquake,” one resident posted online.
