An earthquake hits a Lancashire village for the second time this month UK News

A coastal village has been hit by a second earthquake in a month, with locals reporting windows rattling and shaking during the night.

The British Geological Survey (BGS) said the 2.5 magnitude earthquake struck Silverdale, Lancashire, on Morecambe Bay, near the border with Cumbria, at around 5am on Friday at a depth of 2.6km.

There were no reports of injuries or damage, and the quake was an aftershock of the 3.3-magnitude “big earthquake” on December 3, BGS said.

She added that tremors were felt across the Morecambe Bay area, with reports of a “fast and sharp shaking” along with “thunder noises” and images and radiators.

On the Volcano Discovery website, which tracks earthquakes around the world and collects feedback, locals in the Silverdale area reported “very weak shaking… rumbling, shaking.”

“It woke me up,” said the resident of Arnside, about three miles from Silverdale. “It sounded like a short roar in the distance, as if it happened a few streets away. It only lasted a few seconds.”

A BGS spokesperson told Sky News: “While earthquakes are widespread nationally throughout the year, it is common for small clusters of earthquakes to occur regionally.”

The spokesman added: “Although the events in Lancashire were not small by British standards, they are nowhere near the magnitude of earthquakes found in other parts of the world.”

The 3.3-magnitude quake earlier this month was “felt in the southern Lakes region and Lancashire, particularly in an area 20 kilometers from the epicenter,” including Kendal and Ulverston in neighboring Cumbria, the survey said.

Each year, the BGS detects between 200 and 300 earthquakes in the UK, but only around 20 to 30 are strong enough to be felt.
