California earthquake: Tremors felt in the Bay Area, San Ramon, Hayward, Dublin and Pleasanton

Earthquakes continued to hit California for several days in a row, with several tremors felt in the Bay Area, San Ramon, Hayward, Dublin and Pleasanton on Friday, December 19, according to data from the US Geological Survey (USGS). Residents have been suffering from swarms of earthquakes for about a week.

California was rocked by constant earthquakes

California has been hit by several earthquakes over the past few days. The USGS previously reported that a magnitude 3.1 earthquake occurred near San Ramon, the epicenter of recent seismic activity, at 5:53 a.m. PT (8:53 a.m. ET), on Tuesday, December 16. This was followed by dozens of smaller earthquakes ranging in magnitude from 1.1 to 1.6, according to the Daily Mail.

San Ramon had been hit by several earthquakes before that as well, including a 2.9, 2.3 and 2.2 on December 13, a 2.8 on December 14 and a 2.4 and 2.1 on December 15. There were dozens of other, smaller tremors.

Anne Marie Baltay, a research geophysicist with the USGS, said she doesn't think these tremors are a cause for unusual concern, and they don't indicate that anything larger will affect San Ramon. “These small events, as with all small events, do not indicate an imminent large earthquake,” Baltay told Patch.

“However, we live in a country that is prone to earthquakes, so we must always be prepared for a major event,” she added. “There is a 72% chance of an earthquake of magnitude 6.7 or larger occurring anywhere in the Gulf region between now and 2043. So we must all be aware and prepared.”

USGS data revealed that at least 21 earthquakes ranging in magnitude from 2.9 to 4.0 have rocked San Ramon over the past two months. The city recorded at least 90 earthquakes in the past month alone, but most of them were too small to cause any damage.
