A major earthquake hits Papua New Guinea

A 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck Papua New Guinea on Monday, about 26 miles northeast of the town of Goroka in Eastern Highlands Province, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.

The US Geological Survey said the quake struck at a depth of about 68 miles at 10:31 a.m. UTC (5:31 a.m. ET).

There was a green alert for deaths and economic losses associated with the tremors, meaning there was a low likelihood of either occurring due to the remoteness of the area, despite the strength of the quake.

This occurred along the western boundary of the Australia-Pacific Plate, at the “slow southward drift of the Pacific Plate north of New Guinea at the New Guinea Trench,” according to regional information from the US Geological Survey.
