A white Christmas is a rare occurrence in Colorado Springs, but what about an earthquake?

The National Weather Service's definition of a white Christmas focuses on the amount of snow on the ground on December 25. According to the weather agency, if there is at least 1 inch of snow on the ground on Christmas and more than 0.5 inches falls during the day, it qualifies.

By that measure, white Christmases are fairly rare in Colorado Springs, weather service data show. A typical December 25 day in the city is relatively mild, with temperatures reaching 44 degrees. The last white Christmas, by weather service standards, was in 1987, when there was an inch on the ground on the morning of Dec. 25 and another inch of snow falling during the day. Before that, the last white Christmas was in 1976, with similar snow accumulations.

The city's only “wet Christmas” on record — a day when it didn't snow — was in 2016, when Colorado Springs received nearly a quarter-inch of rain.

On Christmas afternoon in 1994, the north end of the city was in for an earth-shaking surprise when a 4.0 magnitude earthquake struck. While tremors were reportedly felt as far north as Castle Rock, no major damage was reported.

On Thursday, the chance of snow in Colorado Springs is almost non-existent, with partly sunny conditions and a high that could threaten the Christmas record of 67, set in 1955 and 1971.

The lack of sledding opportunities, snowmen, and snowball fights may be frustrating for some Colorado Springs residents, but the lack of a white Christmas comes with some underrated perks:
