Authorities warn of aftershocks after the 6.1 magnitude Taitung earthquake

Taipei, December 24 (CNA) Taiwanese authorities warned Wednesday of possible aftershocks following a 6.1-magnitude earthquake that struck Taitung County in the early evening, and tremors are expected to reach a magnitude of 5.5 or more over the next week.

The quake struck at 5:47 p.m., about 10.1 kilometers north of Taitung County Hall, at a depth of 11.9 kilometers, according to the Central Weather Administration.

The CWA data showed that the earthquake intensity, which measures the actual effects of the quake, was highest at −5 in Taitung's Binan Town, and reached 4 in other parts of Taitung as well as Hualien and Pingtung counties.

Wu Xin-fu, director of the agency's Earthquake Center, said at a press conference on Wednesday that the quake was a surface event caused by the ongoing collision of the Philippine Sea plate and the Eurasian plate.

Wu warned of the possibility of aftershocks measuring 5.5 to 6 magnitude over the next week, and advised the public to remain alert.

Wu said that within a 30-kilometer radius of the epicenter, 28 earthquakes with a magnitude of 5.0 or greater were recorded, including a 6.2-magnitude earthquake in April 2006.

Wednesday's quake occurred during dinner hours, forcing many Taitung residents to leave their homes. Shelves at local supermarkets and stores collapsed, and parts of the roof collapsed at National Taitung University's Physical Education Senior High School, although no injuries were reported.

Train services were temporarily suspended along the Taitung Line due to a power outage, with buses being used to transport passengers to their destinations.

As of 7:30 p.m., rail services between Guanshan and Taitung had resumed after inspections confirmed it was safe to do so, while services between Taitung and Jinlun remained suspended.
