The island's meteorological department said that a 7-magnitude earthquake struck the coastal city in northeastern Taiwan, and there were no immediate reports of serious damage.

The administration said on Saturday that the quake, which struck at a depth of 73 kilometers, was felt across Taiwan and shook buildings in the capital, Taipei, and classified it as Category 4 intensity, meaning minor damage was possible.

The Taipei City government said no major damage was reported in the immediate aftermath of the quake, with some isolated cases of damage occurring, including gas and water leaks and minor damage to buildings.

The US Geological Survey (USGS) estimated the earthquake's magnitude at 6.6.

The Taiwanese power company said that electricity was cut off to more than 3,000 homes in Yilan for a short period.

Major chipmaker TSMC said a small number of its facilities in the Northern Hsinchu Science Park had met evacuation limits after the quake, and evacuated employees have since returned to their sites.

The Meteorological Department said that people should be on alert in anticipation of aftershocks ranging in intensity between 5.5 and 6.0 degrees next day. She also said damage from the quake should be limited because it was relatively deep and struck offshore.

Taiwan President William Lai-cheng TV said in a social media post that authorities had the situation under control and urged residents to be vigilant in anticipation of aftershocks.

Taiwan is located near the intersection of two tectonic plates, and is prone to earthquakes.

In April 2024, a 7.4-magnitude earthquake killed 17 people, triggering landslides and severely damaging buildings around Hualien City.

More than 100 people were killed in an earthquake that struck southern Taiwan in 2016, while a 7.3-magnitude earthquake killed more than 2,000 people in 1999.
