Metro and railway services slowed after Yilan earthquake; Some TSMC employees were evacuated

Taipei, Dec. 28 (CNA) Metro and rail services across Taiwan were briefly disrupted Saturday night after a 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of northeastern Taiwan at 11:05 p.m., while Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) evacuated some employees at selected facilities as a precaution.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located about 32.3 kilometers east of Yilan County Hall, at a depth of 72.8 kilometers, and 17 provinces and cities out of 22 provinces and cities in Taiwan reported a seismic intensity of 4 on the island's seven-level scale.

Following the quake, metro services in Taipei and Taichung operated at a reduced speed before resuming normal operations late Saturday, according to metro operators.

Taiwan High-Speed ​​Railway (THSR) said six trains – four southbound and two northbound – were temporarily halted after seismic alerts were detected along parts of the line in Nangang and Yunlin shortly after 11 p.m.

Meanwhile, TSMC, the world's largest contract chip maker, said a small number of its factories in Hsinchu Science Park met evacuation standards, and employees were evacuated abroad according to emergency procedures. The company said that safety systems in all factories are operating normally.

The Hsinchu Science Park administration said that some companies in Yilan, Longtan and Hsinchu parks have evacuated their employees as a precaution.

Power and water supplies at the Hsinchu Park complex remained normal, although elevator malfunctions were reported in two biomedical buildings, with repairs continuing, according to the administration.

Elsewhere, the National Fire Agency said part of the ceiling in the waiting area of ​​Terminal 2 at Taoyuan International Airport in Taiwan collapsed following the quake, but no injuries were reported.

The agency said six cases of people trapped in elevators were reported in Taipei, New Taipei and Taoyuan, and all cases have been resolved.

As of 1 a.m. on Sunday, authorities had reported no serious injuries due to the earthquake.

A total of 3,465 households in Donghao Township, Yilan County experienced a power outage at some point, but power has since been restored, according to the state-owned Taiwan Power Corporation.
