“I thought someone hit my house.”

Lancaster, Ken. (WSMV) – A 3.1 magnitude earthquake occurred near Lancaster, Kentucky on Sunday, with people as far away as northern Georgia reporting feeling the effects, the US Geological Survey confirmed.

The Kentucky Geological Survey gave the earthquake a slightly higher magnitude of 3.4. In comments about the quake on Facebook, the group said its designation is based on “local magnitude,” while the USGS classification is “duration magnitude.”

“This is due to the larger magnitude of the earthquakes we recorded in central Kentucky,” Seth Carpenter of the Kentucky Geological Survey told WKYT.

More than 400 people reported feeling the effects of the quake to the USGS, and dozens more reported feeling the quake on the KGS Facebook page.

“I think someone hit my house in their truck,” wrote one person in Berea, Kentucky, while another person in South Garrard said they also thought someone hit their house.

“It shook and shook violently,” they said.

Carolyn Boyd, a retired nurse who lives in Lancaster, Kentucky, told WKYT she was reading at home when the quake struck just before 1 p.m. Sunday.

“I wouldn't necessarily say shaking, but it felt like I was shaking in the basement of my house or even outside,” she said, adding that there was a loud bang.

“I thought, ‘What is this?’ Because there were no trains or a train station nearby, so I knew it wasn’t a train,” she said. “So, I sat there and listened. I'd say it took about 10 to 15 seconds.”

No injuries or property damage were reported, Dustin Price of the Garrad County Emergency Management Agency told WKYT.
