Strong winds overnight caused damage across New Jersey, downing trees and power lines, including a massive tree that fell on a home in Springfield.

The tree fell sometime around 8:30 p.m. Monday evening, with winds reaching 50 mph, uprooting a large, apparently decades-old tree, and crashing into the roof of their recently purchased home, homeowner Keren Missio told News 12.

“Me, my wife and my dogs were in our bedroom in the back, and all of a sudden the lights went out at first, and then it sounded like an earthquake. And the house shook,” Missio said.

Missio said she first realized what had really happened and the extent of the damage after receiving a phone call from a neighbor.

“We opened the door and it was like a disaster,” she said. “When you walk in there you find rubble, the whole ceiling collapsed.”

The collapse led to a power outage in the surrounding neighborhood for several hours during the night. As crews cleared the road and power was restored. Neighbors described returning home to witness a shocking scene.

“We came home to this. We weren't home, we came home to this. It was an amazing scene,” neighbor Matt Klinke said.

Crews returned to the scene Tuesday morning with heavy machinery, including wood chippers, saws and a crane, to remove the tree.

Missio said it was a miracle that her entire family, including their pets, were in one area of ​​the house away from where the tree fell. But now the family still faces uncertainty.

“We're in shock, we don't know what's going to happen,” Missio said. “We need to find temporary housing, somewhere our dogs can go with us, with little stress about insurance.” “Now that I see it, I mean it's huge. It's terrifying, isn't it?”
