Iran crisis escalates – protests spread with cries of “death to the dictator” | BBC News

Mass protests and strikes over inflation and currency devaluation have spread from the Iranian capital Tehran to several other cities for a third day. The protests began when traders in Tehran's Grand Bazaar went on strike after Iran's rial hit a record low against the US dollar. Iran's economy is deepening, fueled by international sanctions, and inflation is rising sharply. Videos verified by BBC Persian showed demonstrations in the cities of Karaj, Hamedan, Qeshm, Malard, Isfahan, Kermanshah, Shiraz and Yazd. University students have joined the protests, chanting anti-government slogans including “death to the dictator” – a reference to Iran's ultimate power, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. The security forces used tear gas to disperse the demonstrators. The Iranian government has said that it “recognizes the protests” and that it will “listen patiently, even in the face of harsh voices”. President Masoud Pezeshkian wrote late Monday that he had ordered the X Interior Minister to hold talks with the “representatives” of the protesters, so that measures could be taken to “solve the problems and act responsibly”. Some protesters shouted slogans in support of the son of the late Mohammad Reza Pahlavi Shah, who was overthrown in the 1979 Islamic Revolution, including “Long live the Shah”.
