Blue Temple creates earthquake-resistant bamboo housing in Myanmar

Myanmar-based architecture studio Blue Temple has teamed up with construction company Housing Now to build a series of low-cost bamboo homes capable of withstanding natural disasters.

Located in Myanmar's Bago region, the homes are built from an earthquake-resistant modular structure, and each can, according to the studios, be built in just seven days “for the price of a smartphone.”

The project, now called Modular Bamboo Housing, was created to create low-cost housing for displaced families and public infrastructure in the country.

Blue Temple and Housing Now designed the 26 earthquake-resistant homes as a solution to survive conflict and natural disasters.

Since their construction, the homes, which cost about $1,000 per unit, have survived a 7.7-magnitude earthquake.

“In a region of conflict and intense environmental pressures, the Modular Bamboo Housing Now program has shown that safe and dignified housing can be built for as little as the price of a smartphone,” Blue Temple said.

“Our focus is to make high-performance architecture accessible under severe constraints – using local materials, local labor and prefabrication methods that can survive conflict and natural disasters,” Rafael Ascoli, founder of the Blue Temple, told Dezeen.

The houses, assembled in collaboration with families, are built from prefabricated frames designed to withstand all seismic loads.

These structures are composed of interlocking arched bamboo elements made from bundled “small diameter” bamboo, which is widely available in the country and has the strength of a wood, according to Ascoli.

“In Myanmar, bamboo is the cheapest building material, and small-diameter species are the most abundant,” Ascoli said.

“By assembling, interlocking and connecting them through a dance-guided system, we achieve timber-grade strength at a fraction of the cost and a completely local supply chain,” he explained.

Each house is housed within identical volumes raised on concrete foundations and protected by pitched roofs with overhanging eaves. Large operable windows blend into their ornate facades.

Inside, non-structural panels and partitions allow residents to create custom interior layouts without compromising the home's earthquake resistance.

Ascoli explains that Blue Temple's structural approach means that the homes' aesthetics are a result of the building's architecture rather than its stylistic intent.

“Aesthetics are the direct result of field engineering — clarity through necessity, not design,” he said.

The broader goal of the Housing Now Bamboo Modular Housing project is to create construction methods for “safe, fast and low-cost construction” that “others can imitate,” Ascoli explains.
