Rebuilding continues two years after the Noto earthquake in Japan

January 1 marks two years since a massive earthquake struck the Noto Peninsula. The region in central Japan is still suffering from the effects of the disaster, which killed more than 690 people.

A 7.6-magnitude earthquake shook Noto Prefecture in Ishikawa Prefecture shortly after 4 p.m. on New Year's Day 2024. The quake registered a maximum intensity of 7 on the Japanese seismic scale from zero to 7 and triggered a tsunami.

Ishikawa represents 70 percent of the total. More than 17,000 people live in temporary housing provided by local governments.

This year, municipalities in the province plan to accelerate the construction of public housing units for survivors who face difficulties in rebuilding their homes on their own.

The Horyu-machi area of ​​Suzu City in Ishikawa was severely damaged. A man in his 70s who lives in a temporary housing unit in the city says he will rebuild on the site where his previous home in the area stood. He said he hoped people would return to life as it was before the earthquake, but it would take some time.
