Several earthquakes that struck near the Yukon-Alaska border late on New Year's Eve are part of an ongoing series of aftershocks following one of the largest earthquakes ever recorded in Canada.

The 7.0 magnitude earthquake that occurred on Dec. 6, 2025, was one of the largest earthquakes recorded in the country since seismologists began tracking this type of event about 100 years ago, according to Nick Ackerley, a seismologist with Natural Resources Canada's Hazard Information Service.

“It's a very rich series of aftershocks because it was a fairly large event,” Ackerley said. “This is not unusual.”

Aftershocks, which are technically earthquakes, indicate events close in time and space to a larger event or other major shock, Ackerley explained. In this case, the initial rupture crossed the border between Yukon and Alaska in a remote wilderness area.

“It didn't happen near any large population centers,” he said.

The effects of the earthquakes could be felt slightly in Whitehorse, as noted in reports on local social media and Earthquakes Canada.

The most significant aftershocks on Dec. 31, 2025 recorded a magnitude between 5.6 and 5.7 at 11:46 p.m. Yukon time, followed by 5.0 at 11:51 p.m. and another 5.4 at 11:55 p.m. — while some Yukon residents were preparing to ring in 2026 at midnight, according to Ackerley.

The first of the more significant earthquakes reported by the Canadian Seismological Service struck about 271 kilometers west of Whitehorse on December 31, 2025.

The Canadian Earthquake Authority indicated that damage has not been reported and will not be expected.

Ackerley said they have received reports of objects moving in homes, such as pictures on the walls shaking.

Ackerley encourages people who felt impacted to submit a report via the Earthquakes Canada website.

More aftershocks are expected, according to Ackerley.

He said it's not uncommon for earthquakes to appear in clusters because when a rupture occurs underground where rocks slide along a fissure, that stress can be transferred to adjacent faults, and sometimes those faults slide.

“After a big earthquake, there is a slightly higher probability of earthquakes,” he said. “There is no such thing as predicting earthquakes.” “No one has any idea when it will happen or how big it will be.”
