A 2.1 magnitude earthquake was reported near Milford

A small earthquake was reported in southern New Hampshire early Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The survey said the 2.1-magnitude quake struck about 1 kilometer northwest of Milford at about 1:45 a.m.

One woman walked up to X around 1:50 a.m. to say she felt a shiver.

“@USGS_Quakes, did there just be an earthquake in New Hampshire? Felt like my whole house shook and made a loud noise,” she wrote.

Another X user responded, noting that the quake had rudely interrupted some early morning TV viewing.

“I knew I wasn't crazy!! I had to pause the show because I heard the loudest roar in Nashua!” The person said.

Monday's earthquake comes on the heels of an earthquake that struck the state in November.

The Geological Survey said at the time that the 1.8-magnitude earthquake was centered southwest of Kingston, New Hampshire.

Last January, a rare 3.8 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Maine struck much of the region, from coastal Rhode Island to Albany, New York, and up the coast across New Hampshire to southern Maine. This earthquake was followed by a pair of 2.0 magnitude earthquakes in the same week.

The January 2025 earthquake was the strongest to hit New England since April 2024, when a 4.8 magnitude earthquake centered in New Jersey shook much of the Northeast.

New Hampshire has felt strong earthquakes in the past. In 1982, a 4.5 magnitude earthquake was reported near Sanbornton, in the central part of the state. In December 1940, two magnitude 5.3 and 5.6 earthquakes were reported four days apart near Tamworth, according to USGS data.
