Two people were killed in a 6.5 magnitude earthquake in Mexico

At least two people were killed after a powerful earthquake struck southern and central Mexico on Friday.

CBS, the BBC's news partner in America, reported that as of Friday evening local time, two people had been killed and several others injured.

The epicenter of the 6.5-magnitude earthquake was near the popular tourist town of Acapulco, near San Marcos, in the southwestern state of Guerrero.

State Governor Evelyn Salgado said a 50-year-old woman was believed to have died in Guerrero, while Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada confirmed the death of a 60-year-old man. It also said that 12 people were injured. Brugada said people were still feeling aftershocks from Friday's earthquake.

She urged locals to “remain calm” and “always keep your life bag ready.”

She was referring to the emergency kit that Mexico's National Center for Disaster Prevention encourages residents to prepare “to help survive the first hours of a disaster.” She says items should include a flashlight, radio, water, non-perishable foods, warm clothes and a copy of all important documents.

Brugada said two buildings were being assessed for their risk of collapse. “As a precautionary measure, 34 buildings and 5 homes are being searched.”

After the Mexican earthquake warning system sounded early Friday, residents and tourists rushed to the streets of Mexico City and Acapulco.

The seismic system was established in the wake of the deadly 1985 earthquake that killed more than 10,000 people.

President Claudia Sheinbaum was giving her first news conference of the year when the quake struck.

In a video capturing the moment, Sheinbaum is heard saying, “It's shaking,” as the earthquake warning system rings in the background. The president asked the media to “go out quietly.” Additional video shows buildings shaking in Mexico City and cars shaking in Acapulco, Guerrero.
