A 6.5-magnitude earthquake shakes Mexico City and the southern states

Just two days into the year 2026, Mexico City residents woke up early Friday morning to a 6.5-magnitude earthquake that triggered the capital's seismic warning system, triggering emergency evacuations that sent people onto the streets.

President Claudia Sheinbaum, who had to suspend her daily morning press conference after the earthquake, confirmed that the earthquake did not cause serious damage in the capital.

However, power outages were reported throughout the city, including the neighborhoods of Benito Juarez, Coyoacan, Cuauhtémoc, Gustavo Madero, Iztapalapa, Tlahuac, Venustiano Carranza and Xochimilco.

Besides Mexico City, the earthquake was recorded in most parts of central and southern Mexico, an area prone to earthquakes due to the interaction of the Cocos plate with the North American plates.

It was particularly strong in Acapulco, Guerrero, near the epicenter 15 kilometers south of San Marcos. Residents of Pacific Harbor and Resort reported strong shaking that lasted 30 seconds. The seismic alert triggered emergency protocols at hotels in the Golden District and along the bay.

According to the National Seismological Service (SSN), the earthquake began at 7:58 a.m., and registered a magnitude of 6.5 on the Richter scale, from a depth of 5 kilometers. The Social Security Network said that as of 10:00 a.m., 273 aftershocks had been recorded, the largest of which had a magnitude of 4.2.

A small fire was also reported at an electrical substation on Artículo Street 123 in the Centro neighborhood of Mexico City's Cuauhtémoc neighborhood. Emergency services responded to the accident, and no injuries were reported.

Meanwhile, Brugada wrote on her official X account that civil protection protocols were immediately activated in all 16 neighborhoods following the earthquake, including ground and air monitoring rounds.
