A 6.5 magnitude earthquake strikes the Acapulco area in Mexico

Jan. 3 (UPI) — A 6.5-magnitude earthquake was recorded at 7:58 a.m. local time near Rancho Viejo. Mexico on Friday morning shook buildings in the resort of Acapulco on the Pacific coast.

The Washington Post reported that the quake, which was linked to more than 500 aftershocks, occurred during Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum's first press conference of 2026, and caused at least two deaths.

The epicenter of the quake was 2.5 miles northwest of Rancho Viejo and at a depth of 21.75 miles below the surface, according to the US Geological Survey.

The USGS reported that little or no landslides were expected and residents were exposed to little or no landslide risk from the event.

Some liquefaction is estimated to be with limited exposure to local residents, but some ground failure may occur, according to the USGS.

Rancho Viejo is located about 6 miles east of Acapulco in south-central Mexico, and strong shaking was reported at both locations, with some movement also felt 235 miles to the north in Mexico City.

No tsunami warnings were issued, and none occurred, although aftershocks were expected to occur days or perhaps weeks later and be just as powerful, according to the New York Times.
