Trump says US will 'run Venezuela' after President Maduro captured in military raid | BBC News

President Trump has said the United States will “manage” Venezuela after a military attack on the country and the capture of its president, Nicolas Maduro, and his wife, who have been flown to New York to face drug-trafficking charges. Speaking after the operation, Trump said the US would lead the country “until we can make a safe, proper and sensible transition”. He said US oil companies will fix Venezuela's “broken infrastructure” and “start making money for the people.” Trump said no US soldiers were killed in the operation. He said the US was “ready” for a second “and much larger” attack on the country if necessary. Trump earlier shared a photo of Maduro being held prisoner aboard the USS Iwo Jima. The picture shows the Venezuelan leader blindfolded and wearing ear defenders. Maduro has been indicted in New York on drug and weapons charges, and was taken there as a prisoner after his capture. The US attorney general has said he will face “the full wrath of American justice”. Maduro has denied being the leader of a drug cartel and said the US was plotting to oust him to steal his country's resources.
