Two people were killed in a 6.5 magnitude earthquake that struck Mexico

MEXICO CITY (TNND) – Two people were killed when a powerful earthquake struck southern and central Mexico on Friday morning.

The National Civil Protection Coordination (CNPC), part of Mexico's Secretariat of Security and Protection of Citizens (SSPC), reported that a 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck the country shortly before 8 a.m.

The epicenter of the quake was in San Marcos, Guerrero state, according to the National Seismological Service (SSN). The US Geological Survey said the quake occurred at a depth of 21.7 miles.

There were more than 500 aftershocks.

Guerrero state governor Evelyn Salgado said a 50-year-old woman living in a small community near the epicenter died when her house collapsed.

Civil protection response and assessment protocols were immediately implemented by state and municipal authorities to identify potential impacts, structural damage and risk areas.

Authorities reported a wall collapse and minor landslides along the Tixtla-Chilpancingo highway.

Authorities also said a hospital in Chilpancingo, the capital of Guerrero state, suffered major structural damage and several patients were evacuated. IMSS Bienestar reported that two other medical facilities in San Marcos and Acapulco suffered minor infrastructure damage, especially to roofs and finishes.

The earthquake interrupted President Claudia Sheinbaum's first press conference of 2026 as earthquake alerts sounded.

Sheinbaum, who resumed the briefing a short time later, said she spoke with Evelyn Salgado, the governor of Guerrero state, who told her that no major damage had been reported.

Damage assessments are ongoing.

Residents and tourists felt the strong earthquake and were seen running through the streets of Mexico City and Acapulco when the shaking began.

Jose Raymundo Díaz Taboada, a doctor and human rights defender who lives on one of the peaks surrounding Acapulco, said he heard a loud noise and all the neighborhood dogs started barking.

“At that moment, the seismic alarm went off on my cell phone, and then I started to feel strong shaking with a lot of noise,” he said.

He added that the tremors were milder than in some previous earthquakes, and that he had prepared a backpack containing essentials in preparation for leaving as aftershocks continued.

He said he was unable to reach some friends who live along the Costa Chica southeast of Acapulco because of communications blackouts.
