Jilliac Amagasaki: street performer in a wheelchair

The distinctive stage name of Jilliak Amagasaki is an indication of the physical similarity of the 90-year-old street performers to the Jeliak or Nevkh people of Russia and Sakhalin Island. Born as Amagasaki Katsumi, a Hakodate who performed wild dances on street corners across Japan and beyond.

In Paris, he danced in the middle of the Champs-Élysées until the police stopped his performance and told him he needed to wear more than one red piece of cloth. In the areas devastated by the 1995 Great Hanshin earthquake and the 2011 Great East Japan earthquake and tsunami, as well as Ground Zero in New York City, the “prayer dance” was performed to soothe the lives of the victims.

Amagasaki began his career as a daidōgei street performer half a century ago in Sukiyabashi, part of Tokyo’s Ginza district. He was in his 30s at the time, and has only survived his fans’ contributions since then. In the summer of 2019, I saw Amagasaki dancing in Daimon Square, Hakodate, near where he grew up.

On that day, Amagasaki entered in a wheelchair, and parted a deep wall of people. Parkinson’s disease slowly deprives him of control over his body. After poignantly speaking about his belief that his birth in Hakodate made him what he is today, he abandoned his wheelchair and began performing his most famous works, including “Jungara Dua” (Ninputsu Jongara), “Duel” (Hatachiae), and “A Life” in Jongara “(Jongara ichidai).

He would sometimes prostrate like a Tibetan Buddhist monk in prayer; Other times, he would take a spectator’s hand or pick up a child, becoming one with the people around him. In years past he used to pour a bucket of water over his head, but now he’s using a water bottle. This outdoor dance was well received and laughed – not to mention the growing pile of coins. Amagasaki’s elegance was overwhelming.

The town performance ended in a duet with master Tsugaru-jamisen Takahashi Shikuzan II. Amagasaki’s famous work “A Life in Jongara” is about the first Takahashi Chikuzan, a blind musician who went from house to house playing shamisen for money. When the shamisen tensions sounded, Amagasaki embraced the dance. It was a triumphant return to the land of his inception.

I still have a lot to learn. I yearn to dance more sensitively. The lifestyle he described to us, wearing only a red jacket, was amazing.
