An earthquake shook western Japan, but did not cause serious damage or a tsunami

TOKYO – A strong earthquake struck western Japan on Tuesday, but no major damage or life-threatening injuries were reported.

The Japan Meteorological Agency reported that the 6.4-magnitude earthquake occurred in Shimane Prefecture, northwestern Japan. There was no tsunami risk from the inland quake, which was centered at a depth of about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).

The capital of Matsue Prefecture and nearby cities, including some in neighboring Tottori Prefecture, were among the cities hardest hit by the severe quake.

Local fire departments received several reports of minor injuries, according to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency. Shinkansen bullet trains in the area were stopped or delayed.

JMA officials warned residents of the possibility of subsequent strong earthquakes for about a week.

The Nuclear Regulatory Authority said no anomalies were found at the Chimami Nuclear Power Plant and related facility in the area.

Japan is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, the seismic fault zone surrounding the Pacific Ocean that is one of the most earthquake-prone areas in the world.
