A small earthquake hits northeastern Ohio

MADISON, Ohio — A small earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 2.6 was recorded late Monday two kilometers northeast of Madison in Lake County, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The US Geological Survey reported that the earthquake occurred at 11:50 pm at a depth of about 8.2 kilometers. The event was reviewed by the agency. No injuries or damage were reported immediately.

Northeast Ohio lies within a known seismic zone that has experienced fairly frequent earthquakes since at least 1823, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The largest earthquake ever recorded in the region, a magnitude 4.8, caused damage in northeastern Ohio in 1986. The last devastating earthquake associated with the broader seismic zone, a magnitude 4.5, occurred in 1998 in northwestern Pennsylvania.

Small earthquakes that are not strong enough to cause damage are usually felt in the region two or three times every decade.

Although earthquakes are less common in the central and eastern United States than in the western United States, they are often felt over much larger areas. Seismic waves travel more efficiently through older, denser rocks east of the Rocky Mountains, allowing even modest earthquakes to be felt tens of miles away from their centers.

Earthquakes in Northeast Ohio occur on faults deep within the rock, often miles below the surface. Unlike areas near major plate boundaries, such as California, earthquakes in Ohio are rarely associated with specific faults, since many faults are poorly mapped, deeply buried, or unexplored.
