Real Salt Lake has acquired 17-year-old FW forward Chance Cowell from the San Jose Earthquakes

RSL sends conditional general allocation money to San Jose in exchange for third Quakes Academy player in recent years (Diego Luna, Owen Anderson); Teams are also trading 2027 MLS SuperDraft third-round picks

HERRIMAN, Utah (Tuesday, January 6, 2026) – Real Salt Lake announced today that it has acquired 17-year-old FW Chance Cowell from the San Jose Earthquakes for up to $650,000 in future General Allocation Money (GAM), pending certain performance-based incentives achieved before June 2030. The two Major League Soccer clubs also traded a 2027 MLS third-round pick. SuperDraft chooses, with Earthquakes retaining a percentage of any future transfer or trade involving Cowell.

Coyle — who will join Utah's squad when the 2026 preseason begins this weekend at Zions Bank Training Center in Herriman — now follows former San Jose Academy graduates Diego Luna and Owen Anderson to enroll at Utah through their careers in youth development.

Coyle, 17, made his professional debut for the Earthquakes MLS NEXT Pro Team, The Town FC, on August 3, 2024, in a match against Minnesota United FC 2. In two seasons with TTFC, he made 29 appearances (12 starts) and scored four goals (2g/2a). A native of Ceres, California, and younger brother of former Earthquakes/USMNT standout Cade Cowell, Chance officially became part of the Earthquakes senior team on January 1, 2024, after signing a contract as a homegrown player.

As a dual citizen of the United States and Mexico, Coyle has been called up by both federations at various youth levels. He competed for the Stars and Stripes at the U17, U16 and U15 age groups, and for El Tri on the U15 national team.

The Deal: Real Salt Lake (MLS) has acquired FW Chance Cowell from the San Jose Earthquakes for up to $650,000 in future General Allocation Money (GAM) if certain performance-based incentives are achieved before June 2030. Players, coaches and staff will report later this week ahead of the club's pre-season report date on January 10, with RSL preparing for its 22nd MLS campaign with 2,026 pre-season games in Portugal and Southern California, as Atlantic Cup organizers and Coachella Valley schedule makers bolster various rosters.

Returning to Lagos, Portugal, where he spent part of the 2024 pre-season, Pablo Mastroni's side will play three matches over 13 days in the back half of January as part of the annual Atlantic Cup tournament, with the first two matches against legendary Danish side Randers FC (22 January) – once home to former RSL striker Yura Movsesyan – and Brøndby (26 January), a team also linked to David.
