A new set of minor earthquakes are shaking the San Ramon area

Three minor earthquakes struck Friday morning in San Ramon, the latest group of quakes to shake the same area in the Tri-Valley area over the past few weeks.

A magnitude 3.0 earthquake occurred at 8:14 a.m., followed by magnitude 2.8 and 2.6 earthquakes at 8:16 and 8:18 a.m., respectively, according to preliminary data from the U.S. Geological Survey. The earthquakes were centered in a residential area just south of Bollinger Canyon Road between Dougherty Road and Alcosta Street.

The area is the same general area where a series of minor earthquakes have occurred since November, the largest of which was a magnitude 4.0 on December 19, 2025.

None of the earthquakes during this recent swarm were strong enough to cause significant damage.

San Ramon, which sits atop the Calaveras Fault, has seen similar small swarms of earthquakes over the years for reasons that are not fully understood.

“We don't know exactly why these swarms appear where they are,” Dr. Anne-Marie Baltay, a seismologist and geophysicist with the USGS, told CBS News Bay Area last month. “But we saw that it could be very focused, and in 1990, we saw it kind of moving over time. We think it's some small movements, kind of tiny movements along the fault, or along smaller faults in the area. And that's just generating a few small earthquakes that go off and stimulate each other.”
