Unexplained tremors shake homes across California's high desert

Mysterious explosions heard in 2025 are followed by new loud, unexplained noises shaking homes across the Sahara.

Residents across California's High Desert reported loud shaking noises and their homes shaking on Thursday. The US Geological Survey reported that there was no significant seismic activity during the recent events. These events follow a history of similar unexplained booms and vibrations in the region over several years.

Last year's mysterious booms were followed by loud, unexplained noises last January that shook homes across the Sahara.

Dozens of residents told the Daily Press that around 8:30 a.m. and 1:13 p.m. on Thursday, January 8, they heard a loud “rumble,” immediately followed by “shaking” of homes and property.

Residents from Apple Valley to Lancaster and Barstow to Oak Hills said they heard and felt the rumble, which many believe was an earthquake or sonic boom.

“This morning I heard a loud noise that shook my house,” Hesperia resident Felicia Jackson said. “It happened again in the afternoon, but that was more severe.”

Victorville resident Jose Gonzalez compared the afternoon incident to watching the 2023 movie “Godzilla Minus One,” while sitting in a moving D-BOX seat at a Cinemark theater.

“You watch the movie, and you see Godzilla destroying buildings, and your seat is shaking and shaking,” Gonzalez said. “That's how I felt today.”

Gene Smith of Adelanto said the roar was similar to the feeling of an approaching train while parked near the railroad track.

“I felt the roar under my feet, but then our house shook,” Smith said. “It was the strangest feeling.”

The US Geological Survey reported there was no major earthquake in the area on Monday.

Recent unexplained mutations

The Daily Press reported that in November 2025, unidentified “bang” sounds shook homes and rattled nerves across the Sahara Desert.

Residents in the Phelan, Oak Hills, Balde Mesa and Adelanto areas told the Daily Press that “loud explosions” shook property, frightened horses and made dogs “howl.”

Longtime residents of the High Desert said the “explosions” were not caused by fireworks, thunder, gunshots or sonic booms.

Some speculated that the booming noises came from a “missile test” at Edwards Air Force Base, located more than 50 miles northwest of Phelan.

At the time, the USGS reported no significant seismic activity in the area.

Messages left for the San Bernardino County Police Department about the votes were not returned.

Unidentified explosions, mutations

For decades, residents across the Sahara region have reported identifying “surges” that have shaken properties.

In February 2025, residents of Vilan reported a “bang” sound that shook homes and frightened animals and people, according to the Daily Press.

In January 2024, Apple Valley residents reported nighttime sounds of mysterious, unidentified “bangs,” or “loud bangs,” that shook homes and unnerved nerves, the Daily Press reported.

At that time, the “loud bang” sounds were mostly reported between 8 p.m. and midnight, Apple Valley police spokeswoman Pam Hoffman told the Daily Press.

“Deputies are responding to the area where the callers live but have been unable to determine the cause of the noise,” Hoffman said at the time.

In April 2016, residents of the Sahara desert reported loud explosions and vibrations, but no evidence of an earthquake or other abnormal activity was reported, according to the USGS.

In April 1943, a “mysterious explosion” shook homes in the Lucerne Valley. No one could explain the source of the sound, leaving the entire community “confused,” the Daily Press reported.
