On January 12, 2010, at 4:53 PM local time, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti with its epicenter near the town of Léogane, about 15-25 miles southwest of Port-au-Prince. The quake shook the densely populated capital and the surrounding area, lasting less than a minute but leaving behind a trail of devastation that would shape the nation for decades.

This seismic event led to the collapse of thousands of buildings, including hospitals, schools, government offices, the National Palace, Port-au-Prince Cathedral and the headquarters of the United Nations mission. All major hospitals were damaged or destroyed, forcing wounded survivors to wait dangerously long periods for care, leading to mass burials as morgues filled up.

The human cost was staggering and remains a subject of historical debate. Haitian government estimates put the death toll at about 316,000, with about 300,000 injured and more than a million displaced, although other assessments varied widely due to chaotic conditions on the ground.

In the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, Haiti faced not only physical devastation, but also the collapse of critical infrastructure. The global humanitarian response has been tremendous. Governments, nonprofits and volunteers from around the world came together in Haiti with food, medical support, engineers and emergency supplies in a united effort to save lives and begin rebuilding. But even as aid flows, logistical challenges and already limited infrastructure in Haiti have slowed distribution and raised questions about the effectiveness of international aid.

For Haitians at home and in the diaspora, January 12 has become a day to remember the lives lost, the resilience and the work still needed to build a Haiti resilient to future disasters. Although some progress has been made in reconstruction, many survivors continue to live in makeshift camps years after the earthquake, a reminder of the long road to recovery and the enduring spirit of the Haitian people.
