Third earthquake in 4 days hits northwest Louisiana news

Northwest Louisiana recorded another earthquake on Sunday, northwest of Natchitoches and south of the latest cluster of quakes around Coushatta.

The U.S. Geological Survey recorded a 2.7-magnitude earthquake northwest of Natchitoches around 9:40 a.m. Sunday. The event is the sixth to shake the region since early December, and is the first cluster of earthquakes in northwest Louisiana since a series in Caddo Parish between December 2023 and January 2024.

The epicenter of Sunday morning's quake was near the unincorporated community of Allen in Natchitoches Parish. Its depth was recorded at about 3 miles.

Since December, there have been regular tremors of about the same strength and depth in that part of northwest Louisiana.

Four of them were near Coushatta: a 2.7 magnitude earthquake on December 4; A 2.7 magnitude earthquake on December 11; And two earthquakes measuring 3.1 on January 8.

There was also a recorded USGS earthquake near Pleasant Hill, with a magnitude of 2.9.

Before the earthquake cluster began in December, there had not been a recorded earthquake with an epicenter in northwest Louisiana since January 2025. The USGS recorded seven earthquakes near Mooringsport between December 19, 2024, and January 18, 2025. On August 21, the USGS recorded two earthquakes in Huxley, Texas.

Geologists believe the earthquakes in northwest Louisiana, which are rare but increasingly frequent, are linked to the use of wastewater disposal wells used by the oil and gas industry.
