An earthquake hits the Kashmir Valley, and there are no reports of damage

Srinagar, February 2, 2020 (Xinhua) A moderate-intensity earthquake, with an epicenter in Budgam district, shook parts of the Kashmir Valley in the early hours of Monday morning, officials said.

The tremors, which were felt at around 5:35 a.m., caused panic among residents who rushed to leave their homes in several areas. The quake originated at a shallow depth of 10 km, and was epicentered near Budgam, according to data from the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) published by independent weather portal Kashmir Weather.

Initial assessments from the ground indicate no loss of life or major damage to infrastructure, official sources told news agency Kashmir News Service (KNS).

“The departments concerned are actively monitoring the situation. Click here to follow our WhatsApp channel. As per initial reports received so far, no casualties or major property damage have been reported from any district in Jammu and Kashmir,” said a senior official from the state disaster management authority.

The 4.8 magnitude quake released seismic energy equivalent to about 239 tons of TNT. Areas closest to the epicenter include Charar Sharif, Pulwama, Srinagar and Shopian.

The authorities urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information. Eyewitnesses described feeling a strong, short tremor that lasted for several seconds. (KNS)
