4.2 A strong earthquake hits San Ramon today after a series of tremors: US Geological Survey

At least 19 earthquakes, including a 4.2-magnitude quake, struck California’s Bay Area on Monday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

A map from the US Geological Survey shows that the series of quakes, which struck within two hours, struck near San Ramon, about 30 miles east of San Francisco.

Data from the US Geological Survey show that the magnitude of the seismic events ranged from 2.5 to 4.2 magnitude, at shallow depths of about 5 miles or less.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, and no tsunami warnings were issued.

California experiences frequent seismic activity due to its location above several major fault systems, most notably the San Andreas Fault, which runs about 750 miles across the Golden State.

The largest quake in the series recorded a magnitude of 4.2 around 7 a.m. local time, after an initial quake was reported near 6:27 a.m., according to the USGS.

The USGS shows that at least 19 earthquakes occurred in roughly an hour to 90 minutes, with some local media noting more than 30 tremors as the morning progressed.

Shaking was reported across the Bay Area and into the Central Valley, where intensity maps showed waves reaching toward Sacramento, Stockton and Modesto, according to an interactive USGS map.

Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) slowed trains while conducting track inspections, causing a systemwide delay of about 20 minutes Monday morning, the Mercury News reported.

The swarm came after weeks of intermittent activity in the Tri-Valley area, including a magnitude 3.1 earthquake reported Friday and a previous period of 91 earthquakes of magnitude 2 and above since Nov. 9, according to U.S. Geological Survey records.

The strongest earthquake in Monday’s sequence was centered about 2.5 miles southeast of downtown San Ramon at a depth of about six miles, according to USGS data.
