The swarm of earthquakes in San Ramon is felt around the Bay Area, with more than 20 small earthquakes

In San Ramon, Rachel Hayes woke up to a 4.2 magnitude earthquake, which she said was one of the largest she had felt in a long time. She smashed some things around her house and sent her cats to hide.

“It’s getting really scary,” Hayes said after another 3.8-magnitude quake struck just before 7:30 a.m.

Other earthquakes, ranging in magnitude from 2.5 to 3.8, occurred around Alcosta Street south of Bollinger Canyon Road. They likely originated along the Calaveras Fault, which produced another set of earthquakes in San Ramon in December.

It is common for a fault to produce such attacks, according to seismologists. Experts say small earthquakes generally do not indicate that a “big one” is imminent, and the USGS notes that after Monday’s seismic activity, there is less than a 6% chance of a larger quake occurring next week.

But the strike-slip fault is thought to have an 11% chance of causing a larger quake by 2033. Calaveras is capable of producing a 6.7-magnitude earthquake. Morgan Hill shook with a magnitude of 6.2 in 1984.

“This has been a very crazy hour,” Mona Epstein, a San Ramon resident, said after the initial wave of earthquakes. “It won’t stop. My nerves are frayed.”

No major damage or injuries were reported from Monday’s tremor, but Epstein said the quakes kept her awake most of the early morning, and Nextdoor was “bursting” with concerns and reactions from neighbors. Epstein said her doors opened during one of the earthquakes.

BART reduced train speeds to conduct track safety checks after the shakeout. The agency said it expects delays of up to 20 minutes systemwide as it recovers.
