An earthquake shakes Super Bowl week in the San Francisco Bay Area

SAN FRANCISCO — The start of Super Bowl week came with an unexpected surprise Monday morning when an earthquake struck the Bay Area. The US Geological Survey said that the 4.2-magnitude earthquake was centered south of San Ramon, California.

The quake was strong enough that it was felt throughout the Bay Area from Oakland to San Francisco and all the way to Santa Clara, where Super Bowl LX will be played on February 8. When you put on a large event in the Bay Area, there’s always the possibility of an earthquake and that’s exactly what happened here.

The magnitude 4.2 quake occurred at 7:01 a.m. PT and was part of a series of quakes that struck over a period of about 30 minutes on Monday. The first quake, with a magnitude of 3.8, struck San Ramon at about 6:27 a.m. PT. Two minutes later, the same area was hit by a 3.3 magnitude earthquake. This quake was followed by a group of 20 smaller earthquakes, according to the USGS.

The earthquakes were large enough that the Bay Area Railroad (BART) system had to start running its trains at reduced speeds so that BART employees could conduct track inspections.

It’s not clear if the Seahawks and Patriots felt any of the tremors that rocked the Bay Area Monday morning, but many around them did.

Both teams arrived in the Bay Area on Sunday, but will not be based in San Francisco. The Patriots are staying at a hotel in Santa Clara while the Seahawks are staying at a hotel in San Jose. Both hotels are located about 35 miles from the epicenter of the country’s largest earthquake, so players must have felt something. There’s a good chance they’ll be asked about it on Super Bowl opening night on Monday.

With so many earthquakes hitting the Bay Area, it will certainly be interesting to see if we get one on Super Bowl Sunday. The Bay Area was hit by a 6.0-magnitude earthquake in 2014, just hours before the 49ers were set to host a preseason game at Levi’s Stadium, and despite the brutal shaking, the game was still played. Given the location of Levi’s Stadium, it would likely take a massive earthquake on game day for the NFL to consider postponing the Super Bowl.
