The government confirms the support of residents amid the earthquake in Sultan Kudarat

Islan, Sultan Kudarat (PIA) – Residents of coastal areas in Sultan Kudarat have received assurances of quick assistance and full preparedness from the government as the ongoing “earthquake swarm” is affecting different parts of the province.

Governor Dato Pax Ali Mangudadatu said the provincial government is closely coordinating with national agencies and local government units to ensure the safety and well-being of residents, especially those living in high-risk coastal communities.

“We are mobilizing all available assets of the provincial government. Our priority is to ensure that the affected families are safe and that assistance reaches them immediately,” Mangudadatu said.

The county government is coordinating with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) to release immediate cash assistance to families affected by the situation.

He added: “We are working closely with the Department of Social Welfare and Development to ensure that families affected by the earthquakes receive immediate support, including cash assistance, to help them cope and recover.”

Data from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) indicates that thousands of mild and moderate earthquakes have been recorded in the region since January 20. The most significant earthquake to date was the 5.7 magnitude earthquake on January 28.

The ongoing seismic activity has affected 11,898 households (about 35,000 individuals) based on the initial assessment. This list includes 8,074 families in 10 villages in Kalamansig, 3,284 families in six villages in Lebak, and 522 families in 13 villages in Palembang.

The latest reports issued by the authorities indicate that there were no casualties or serious damage to infrastructure as a result of the earthquakes.

Beyond responding to emergencies, Mangudadatu conveyed a message of reflection and solidarity, urging residents to stay grounded and united during this difficult time.

The governor said: “Humans cannot control earthquakes, God is the one who controls them. Humans cannot control earthquakes, only God has this power. This is a reminder for us to be humble.”

He reiterated that public safety remains the top priority, stressing that he will not hesitate to suspend classes if necessary to protect students and teachers.

“We have to make sure the students and teachers are safe. If that happens, I will not hesitate to suspend classes for one month or one year,” Mangudadatu said, adding that schools must be prepared to switch to blended, modular or online learning to ensure continuity of education during disasters.

(We must ensure the safety of both students and teachers. If necessary, I will not hesitate to suspend classes, even if it takes a month or a year.)

He advised residents to remain calm, adhere to official announcements issued by the authorities, and follow earthquake preparedness procedures as seismic activity continues in the province.

“These vehicles show that when we work together, we can overcome challenges,” said Mayor Rafael Jorge Flota III. “Our response will now be faster and more effective in protecting our community.”

Flota announced that the local government unit recently purchased a 4×4 heavy dumper with a capacity of 5-7 cubic metres. The local government unit will use the vehicle for disaster operations, road clearing, and other emergency response activities.

He also said that the municipality received a new patient transportation vehicle from the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office to facilitate faster and easier transportation of patients during emergencies.
