Final Dref Report for the 2025 Ethiopia Earthquake (MDRET037) – Ethiopia
What happened, where and when?
The Vental Volcanic Complex, located on the Main Ethiopian Rift, experienced increased seismic activity in late December 2024. The frequency of earthquakes increased during this period, with several events of notable magnitude recorded. This seismic increase was accompanied by the opening of steam vents, leading to the release of steam and underground gases.
Between 4 and 6 January 2025, more than 20 earthquakes struck the Awash-Vintal region. The most significant earthquake was a 5.8 magnitude earthquake that occurred on January 4 near the Dauphin Mountains. This earthquake caused extensive damage to community shelters and critical social service infrastructure. Experts believe the increased seismic activity is linked to the movement of magma underground, although it remains unclear whether an eruption will occur, and if so, from what location – Vental, Dauphine, or a possible new vent.
Nearly 99,000 people were affected in three regions: 60,000 in Afar, 20,000 in Oromia, and 9,000 in Amhara. Many residents expressed uncertainty about appropriate precautions in the face of volcanic hazards. About 90,000 people have already been displaced, and the government has evacuated them to a new, safer location within the areas concerned.
The displaced face urgent humanitarian needs, including food, drinking water and shelter. The Ethiopian Red Cross Society Disaster Response Team (BDRT) joined the Ethiopian Disaster Risk Management Committee (EDRMC) and other partners to conduct a joint assessment in the affected areas and report back to headquarters in a timely manner for urgent support.
The assessment highlighted several pressing humanitarian concerns. While only two casualties and a number of minor injuries were reported, significant damage was observed to key infrastructure, including homes, health facilities, schools and roads. These developments occurred amid an ongoing cholera outbreak in the Awash River Valley, exacerbating the vulnerability of affected communities.
