A 4.2 magnitude earthquake strikes central Montana news

The quake occurred less than 10 miles from Great Falls and was felt throughout the area.

A 4.2-magnitude earthquake was felt Thursday afternoon in central Montana northeast of Great Falls, though authorities said there were no early reports of damage.

The US Geological Survey said the quake occurred six miles underground shortly before 1 p.m. Shortly after the earthquake, the Great Falls Police Department urged Facebook followers to only use 911 for serious emergencies, adding that the 911 phone lines were “starting to go crazy.”

Less than an hour after the quake, a spokesperson for the city of Great Falls told the Montana Free Press that no major damage had been reported yet, although public safety departments continued to monitor the situation.

Great Falls City Commissioner Shannon Wilson said she was at Celtic Cowboy, a downtown restaurant, when the quake struck. She said she ran outside thinking she might see a cloud of smoke somewhere. Wilson, an Army veteran, also witnessed explosions.

“It seemed like a blast to me,” Wilson said. “I’ve been through many earthquakes, and I’ve never felt anything like this.”

Nearly three hours after the quake, Great Falls Mayor Corey Reeves said the city had received no reports of major damage or injuries. He said he was in the basement of the Alliance for Youth building, off 33rd Street and 11th Street South, when he thought someone was moving a heavy object upstairs. Within seconds it became clear.

“It was like, holy smoke, it’s an earthquake,” Reeves said Thursday afternoon.

A statement issued by Malmstrom Air Force Base stated that the earthquake did not cause any damage to the facilities at the base or through the missile range.

A media release from the National Weather Service said the quake was felt in areas north of Shelby and as far south as Helena.

Montana is struck by up to five earthquakes a year, although most are too small to be felt.
