SARATOGA SPRINGS, Utah — What shook many in both the Salt Lake and Utah valleys was felt by neighbors in the Harvest Hills area of ​​Saratoga Springs. She even had some of the youngsters use what they learned in school.

“They usually make us get under our desks and cover our noses and necks,” said Jacqueline Thomas, a student at Harvest Primary School.

Some of her colleagues at Harvest had to do this, while Thomas and others were on vacation.

“We were playing kickball,” the fifth-grader said. “They kicked the ball around and we all started moving really fast.”

It turned out that these students were one mile from the epicenter.

“We received notification from the elementary school that the kindergarteners were scared and crying and wanted to know how their families were doing,” said Josh Kimball, a father of three.

Kimball was working safely from home, but his home on Verbena Drive was practically on top of the quake.

“I’m sitting up and moving like this,” Kimball said, swaying from side to side. “He was shaking a lot.”

Reactions varied from door to door.

“I was born and raised in Sandy sitting on the bench, and I’ve never faced anything like this,” Kimball said.

“This wasn’t our first rodeo with earthquakes,” neighbor Dallin Hester said. “I was in Chile in 2010 when they had the big earthquake [8.8 magnitude]”.

Even with the same family, Hester’s family had different experiences.

“Our son took a nap through the whole thing,” Dallin’s wife, Whitney Hester, said. “But our daughter got a little scared.”

Many were understandably afraid. But Jacqueline Thomas wasn’t the type to panic.

“Well, not really for the big stuff, but it’s cool to be like a vibrato without even trying,” Thomas said. “It’s just kind of quiet.”

The “shaking” is all that’s happening, according to Dr. Julia Morton, a research scientist at the University of Utah’s seismic stations.

“It’s a normal fault, which is typical for our area – that’s the type of fault we have,” Dr Morton said.

She says the 100-plus earthquakes they’ve tracked in the past two weeks are record-breaking; They see more than 2,000 in a given year. It’s often not felt, but she says it’s a visceral reminder when it does.

“These earthquakes were a good reminder that we are in earthquake country, that we are exposed to earthquakes, and to help prepare for that,” Dr. Morton said.
