M6.2 earthquake in East Java, BMKG indicates no tsunami threat

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – A 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck the city of Basitan, East Java, at around 1:00 a.m. on Friday, February 6, 2026, according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

The epicenter of the marine earthquake is located at coordinates 8.98 south and 111.18 east, 89 kilometers southeast of the city of Basitan, East Java, and at a depth of 58 kilometers.

“The earthquake was superficial and occurred due to subduction plate activity,” Daryono, director of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center at BMKG, said in a statement on Friday. “The results of the source mechanism analysis indicate that the earthquake has a thrust fault mechanism.”

Dariono stated that the Basitan earthquake is a type of earthquake with a large thrust, as evidenced by its propulsive movement at a shallow depth. “Fortunately, the Basitan earthquake did not reach a magnitude of 7.0, as it would likely trigger a tsunami,” he added.

BMKG reported, based on residents’ reports, that several homes were damaged by the tremor. “A house collapsed in Bloso village, Pacitan district,” BMKG said, citing a report from Polo, a volunteer in Pacitan. In addition, one roof collapsed in Jatisrono District, Wonogiri District, Central Java.

This earthquake was felt in the areas of Bantul, Sulaiman and Basitan with an intensity scale of IV MMI, meaning that many people felt it indoors during the day.

In the areas of Kulon Brogo, Trengalik, Wonogiri, Malang, Cirebon, Blitar, Surakarta, Karanganyar, Magelang, Gombang, Tulungagung, Ponorogo, Magitan, Nganjok, Wonosobo and Pangernejara, the earthquake was felt on the MMI III intensity scale, with vibrations resembling a passing truck.

Weaker vibrations were felt in II MMI in Tuban and Jepara. Modeling shows that this earthquake does not pose a tsunami threat.
