The risk of earthquakes is low to moderate for Malaysia over the next 10 years, Parliament said

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s risk of earthquakes over the next 10 years will remain at a low to moderate level, Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Arthur Joseph Kurup said.

He said the country’s location on the Sunda Escarpment and outside the Pacific Ring of Fire gives the country a relatively stable geological environment.

However, the Ministry indicated that this stability is not absolute, as Malaysia is still affected by tectonic stress resulting from the interaction of major plates in the region.

“Based on the continuous monitoring data conducted by the Department of Minerals and Geosciences, the risk level of earthquakes over the next 10 years has been assessed as being within the low to medium range, taking into account historical records, seismic activity patterns and the tectonic setting of the country,” he said in a written response to a question from Datuk Iskandar Zulkarnain Abdul Khalid (MP for Kuala Kangsar).

Mr. Iskandar had asked the ministry to clarify the long-term effects on the surface and structural features of the terrain in the country following recent earthquake incidents.

He also requested clarification of the risk situation and possible frequency of earthquakes in Malaysia over the next 10 years.

Datuk Seri Kurup said Sabah is still known as the area with the most active seismic activity, and there is still a possibility of moderate to strong earthquakes.

“For Peninsular Malaysia, although the risk of earthquakes cannot be completely ruled out, analysis of data and previous records indicate that the magnitude of any of these events is not expected to exceed magnitude 6,” he said.

The minister added that with regard to the frequency of earthquake occurrences, there is still no technology capable of accurately predicting the exact timing of an earthquake.

“However, ongoing monitoring indicates that small earthquakes are expected to continue intermittently as part of the natural process of tectonic energy release,” Mr. Kurup explained.

“This information will be used as a basis for risk assessment and national preparedness planning.”

Regarding the long-term effects on the Earth’s surface structures, he said that the effects of earthquakes occur cumulatively and involve changes in geological structures as well as landforms.

“Repeated seismic tremors have the potential to reactivate ancient fault lines, cause subtle structural changes in rock formations, and induce stress within layers of the Earth’s crust.

“From a geomorphological perspective, seismic events may change the shape of a river and permanently affect slope stability, as evidenced by the Ranau region following the 2015 earthquake,” he said. Star News Network/Asia
