Scientists suggest a surprising link between space weather and earthquakes

A new theoretical study explores how activity high above Earth could subtly influence processes deep within the planet’s crust.
Researchers at Kyoto University provide new insight into how space weather interferes with the physics of earthquakes. Their model asks whether changes in the ionosphere could, in rare cases, apply additional electrical forces to already fragile parts of the Earth’s crust, and help push a large earthquake toward initiation.
Business is no way to predict earthquakes. Instead, it charts a physical trajectory that begins with solar flares and other intense solar activity, which can quickly reshape the distribution of charged particles high above Earth. These ionospheric charge shifts can be measured because they change how satellite navigation signals travel through the upper atmosphere, which is the main reason scientists track total electron content in the first place.
Within the crust, the model focuses on areas of fractured rock that can trap water at extreme temperatures and pressures, potentially reaching a supercritical state. Under these conditions, the researchers treated the damaged region as electrically active, acting as a capacitor linked through capacitive coupling to both the Earth’s surface and the lower ionosphere. In effect, the crust and ionosphere become part of a large electrostatic system rather than isolated layers.
Electrostatic forces resulting from solar activity
During strong solar events, the electron density in the ionosphere can rise enough to form a more negative layer at lower altitudes. The model suggests that this atmospheric charge does not remain confined to the top. Because the system is capacitively connected, the changing ionospheric charge can translate into intense electric fields within tiny voids in fractured crustal rock, on the nanometer scale.
Why does this matter for earthquakes? Pressure within small cavities can affect how cracks grow and coalesce, especially when the crack zone is already close to failure. In the Kyoto team’s calculations, the resulting electrostatic pressure can reach levels similar to other subtle forces known to influence fault stability, including tidal pressures and gravity.
Their quantitative estimates link the effect to large ionospheric perturbations associated with solar flares that raise the total electron content by several tens of TEC units. Under these conditions, the model indicates that electrostatic pressures of up to several megaPascals can develop within cortical voids, a range large enough to be mechanically relevant in the correct situation.
Before some major earthquakes, scientists have reported unusual ionospheric behavior, such as higher electron densities, lower ionospheric height, and unusually slower propagation of medium-range mobile ionospheric disturbances. Historically, such signals have usually been interpreted as results of stress buildup in the Earth’s crust, rather than as effects that may also feed into crustal fracture processes.
Two-way interaction framework
The new model offers a complementary perspective by proposing a two-way interaction: while crustal processes may influence the ionosphere, ionospheric perturbations themselves may also exert feedback forces on the crust. This framework offers a possible physical explanation linking space weather phenomena to seismic processes without invoking direct causality.
The study discusses recent large earthquakes in Japan, including the 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake, as examples that are tentatively consistent with the proposed mechanism. In these cases, intense solar flare activity occurred shortly before the seismic events. The authors stress that such a temporal coincidence does not prove a direct causal relationship, but is consistent with a scenario in which ionospheric perturbations act as a contributing factor when the crust is already in a critical state.
By integrating concepts from plasma physics, atmospheric science, and geophysics, the proposed model expands the traditional view of earthquakes as purely internal Earth processes. The results suggest that monitoring ionospheric conditions, coupled with subsurface observations, may help improve scientific understanding of earthquake initiation processes and assess seismic hazards.
Future research will focus on combining GNSS-based high-resolution ion tomography with space weather data to elucidate the conditions under which ionospheric perturbations may exert a significant electrostatic influence on the Earth’s crust.
