Maine is experiencing a minor earthquake in Aroostook County

A minor 2.3 magnitude earthquake struck Aroostook County, Maine, between Mars Hill and Bridgewater. No damage was reported.

AROOSTOOK COUNTY, Maine — If you felt a brief tremor between 6:50 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tuesday, you weren’t imagining it.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has confirmed a 2.3 magnitude earthquake occurred near the border of Mars Hill and Bridgewater in Aroostook County. The quake was recorded at a very shallow depth, making even small earthquakes easier to feel near the epicenter.

There were no reports of damage or injuries.

On the magnitude scale, a 2.3 earthquake is considered a small earthquake.

While Maine is not known for large or frequent earthquakes, small quakes are not unusual.

According to the USGS, minor earthquakes occur periodically in northern New England, including Maine. Most measure less than size 3.0.

Historically, the strongest earthquake recorded in Maine occurred in 1904 near Eastport, with an estimated magnitude of 5.9. This earthquake caused damage to chimneys and buildings and was felt throughout much of New England and Canada.
