The Sabah earthquake is the strongest to hit Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: The 6.8-magnitude earthquake that struck the Sabah coast early yesterday morning is the strongest earthquake to hit the country in recent memory.

Director-General of the Meteorological Department of Malaysia (MetMalaysia), Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anib, said that based on the department’s records, the previous strongest earthquake in Malaysia occurred on June 5, 2015, in Ranau, Sabah.

The 6.0 magnitude earthquake in Ranau claimed 18 lives and is still considered one of the most notable earthquakes in the country’s history.

Commenting on yesterday’s earthquake, Muhammad Hisham explained that it occurred off the coast of Sabah State because the state is located near the “Ring of Fire” in the Pacific Ocean, which is a seismically active region formed due to the movement of the Earth’s tectonic plates.

“We are monitoring the situation closely and will continue to do so. No aftershocks have been recorded so far.

He added: “Because the epicenter of the earthquake was located deep below the Earth’s surface, at a depth of 678 kilometers, the public only felt mild tremors.”

In an earlier statement, MetMalaysia said a strong 6.8-magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Sabah at 12.57am, but did not pose any tsunami threat.

The epicenter of the quake was about 49 kilometers west of Kudat and Sabah, and tremors were felt in parts of Sabah, Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia.

Meanwhile, the Operations Control Center of the Fire and Rescue Department will conduct continuous field monitoring as a precautionary measure following the earthquake that struck the Sabah coast, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.

Ahmad Zahid, who is also the head of the National Disaster Management Committee, said patrols were also conducted in coastal areas near the Sabah International Convention Centre, as well as inspections in several areas, including Putatan, Kudat and surrounding areas, to ensure the situation remained safe and under control.

He advised residents in the surrounding areas to remain alert, follow the instructions of the authorities, remain calm and avoid panic.
