Bodo/Glimt completed the greatest achievement in the history of the small Norwegian team on Tuesday with a 2-1 victory over Inter Milan and reaching the last 16 of the Champions League with a score of 5-2 on aggregate.

The team took a 3-1 lead in last week’s first leg in the Arctic Circle, and second-half goals from Jens Petter Hauge and Haakon Evgens stunned the San Siro and set up a draw with Manchester City or Sporting of Portugal in the next round.

More than 3,000 fans traveled to Milan to watch their team continue their impressive first season in Europe’s elite club competition, a huge number for a club from a city with a population of around 50,000.

There were 20,000 more people in the San Siro than in Bodo on Tuesday night, and the vast majority left disappointed after Inter, who scored a late goal through Alessandro Bastoni, failed to stage the comeback that coach Cristian Civo thought could happen.

Inter’s elimination was another blow to Italian football on the European stage, with all four Serie A clubs potentially exiting the Champions League on Thursday.

Juventus and Atalanta trail Galatasaray and Borussia Dortmund respectively, with neither given much chance of qualifying ahead of their matches on Wednesday.

But it was a historic night for Bodo/Glimt, who have been crowned Norwegian champions in four of the past six seasons, and it will be a tough test for whoever they face next month.

They became the first Norwegian team to qualify for the knockout stage of the Champions League since the competition was renamed in 1992.

Inter, as expected, were in front from the start, and Pio Esposito headed over a brilliant third-minute chance from a Federico DeMarco cross.

Nikita Heikin headed Demarco’s powerful shot over the bar as Marcus Thuram watched as his powerful long-range effort crashed just over the bar.

But as the match wore on, a pattern emerged of Inter attacking from the flanks and passing crosses that were comfortably dealt with by the Bodo/Glimt defenders.

Hogg pounced in the 58th minute after a disorganized passage of play as Inter defender Manuel Akanji, who was only moments from returning to the field after treatment for a cut eyebrow, gifted the ball to Ole Dedryk Blomberg on the edge of the penalty area.

Blomberg failed to score in a one-on-one clash with Yann Sommer but Hogg scored his sixth Champions League goal to send the crowd wild in delirium.

Akanji hit the post 10 minutes later but Evgen made sure of Bodo/Glimt’s pass in the 72nd minute when he brilliantly slotted home a pass from Hogg inside the box.

Bastoni forced the ball over the goal line shortly afterwards, but it did not matter for Inter as they remained trying to secure the Serie A title, which seemed likely due to their 10-point lead over local rivals Milan.

Newcastle reaches the round of 16

Newcastle United completed their Champions League round of 16 campaign with a 3-2 victory over Qarabag on Tuesday, qualifying 9-3 on aggregate over the Azerbaijani champions.

The Magpies will make up a group of six English teams in the round of 16 alongside Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham.

The encounter, which involved a round-trip of more than 5,000 miles (8,000 km), ended in 45 minutes last week, with Newcastle leading 5-0 at half-time en route to a 6-1 victory.

That allowed Eddie Howe to rotate his team significantly, with four-goal first-leg hero Anthony Gordon among those on the bench.

Newcastle still made another fast start to extend their lead twice in the space of six minutes.

Sandro Tonali fired in the rebound after Dan Byrne’s shot was blocked before Joelinton headed in Harvey Barnes’ cross.

Qarabag had beaten Benfica and Eintracht Frankfurt in the league stage to qualify for the play-off round, and at least salvaged some pride with two goals in the second half.

Camilo Duran beat Bern to reduce the deficit before the Newcastle defender was penalized for a handball inside the penalty area.

Aaron Ramsdale saved Marko Jankovic’s penalty but Elvin Javarguliev scored the rebound.

Between the visitors’ goals, Sven Botman scored a header from a corner kick.

This brings the number of goals conceded by Karabakh in the Champions League to 30, a record for a single season in the competition.
